Robot Red-Light Districts By 2050? [VIDEO]

April 22, 2012 By WebGlitzer

Robots are slowly taking over many human jobs — even those in the sex industry.

Two researchers from Victoria University in Wellington, New Zealand predict that robot prostitutes may be commonplace by 2050. The researchers, futurist Ian Yeoman, and sexologist Michelle Mars, say the robot sex trade could result in positive shifts in society.

“The futuristic scenario of sex tourism suggests android prostitutes will reign supreme, eliminating the risk of contracting sexually transmitted infections in an industry free from sex slavery,” reports the Sydney Morning Herald.

Robots, Men And Sex Tourism, a paper the duo published in the journal Futures, envisions a robot sex club in Amsterdam called “Yub-Yum,” and robot red-light districts. Clients would pay about $ 9,500 to have their way with one of the various sex robots, offered in a variety of ethnicities, body shapes, ages, languages and sexual features, the article continues. “All androids are made of bacteria resistant fibre and are flushed for human fluids, therefore guaranteeing no Sexual Transmitted Diseases are transferred between consumers.”

“Virtual sex, changing behaviors and what is science fiction and reality is a blurred paradigm of liminality,” they write in the study.

What do you think about this prediction? How plausible is this scenario? Tell us in the comments.

Holographic Tupac May Be Coming to a Concert Near You

April 17, 2012 By WebGlitzer

The return of late rapper Tupac Shakur in 3D holographic form during a performance with Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre at the 2012 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in California has taken the Internet by storm, as many tweeted their reactions to the moving and eerie event and made the YouTube clip go viral in just 24 hours.

Now, according to the Wall Street Journal, virtual Tupac could team up with Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre later this year and go on tour.

Those associated with Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg are expected to discuss the potential concept soon. Besides a tour with the two rappers and holo-Tupac, the report notes the possibility of involving other large-scale performers from Eminen to 50 Cent at stadium shows.

Tupac’s holographic image was developed by Digital Domain Media Group Inc., the same group that created the visual effects for Brad Pitt’s character the film The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

This isn’t the first time holographic technology has been used during music performances. For example, the late Elvis Presley performed a duet as a hologram with Celine Dion on American Idol a few years ago.

But reactions to Tupac’s appearance with Snoop and Dr. Dre have been mixed. Although some applauded the use of technology in this way — including artists such as Rihanna and Questlove from The Roots via Twitter — others noted that the concept was eerie.

Would you go see a virtual Tupac tour or any show with 3D holographic performers such as Michael Jackson or Elvis Presley? Let us know in the comments.

Lost Your Phone? The Government Wants to Find it For You

April 11, 2012 By WebGlitzer

iOS-iPhone-600If you’re one of the many cellphone owners who’ve ever left their mobile device behind at a crowded restaurant, packed bar or city-crossing taxi, you know the heart-sinking shock felt when you reach for your phone only to find it missing — all because some quick-fingered swindler grabbed it while you were distracted.

You’re also not alone. In Washington, D.C., New York and other major cities, 40% of robberies involve cellphones. In the capital region, the number of cellphone robberies is up 57%.

How can we reduce the number of mobile devices thefts out there? The Federal Communications Commission thinks it has the answer. The FCC announced its PROJECTS Initiative on Tuesday, a three-point plan to fight cell phone theft.

First, the FCC will be setting up a massive universal database which will allow carriers to automatically disable any mobile devices — including both cellphones and wireless-enabled tablets — reported stolen. The Commission says that such a database will dramatically reduce stolen devices’ value to would-be buyers.

The FCC has called upon all countries of the world to join the database program, which would help prevent stolen phones from being smuggled overseas and used elsewhere in the world.

Second, the Commission wants cell phone manufacturers to program devices to automatically prompt users to create passwords and take other steps to protect their data. That, argues the Commission, would make users somewhat more security-conscious.

Finally, a widespread public education plan will teach owners of mobile devices about the availability of mobile apps that allow users to remotely lock and delete the contents of stolen phones and tablets. The FCC has already begun the campaign with a list of helpful tips posted online.

Mobile phone designers Apple, Motorola, Qualcomm, HTC, Microsoft, Nokia and RIM are all on-board for the FCC’s plan. On the provider side, AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon and Nex-Tech Wireless have agreed to help with the anti-theft initiative. All of these companies are expected to report to the FCC four times each year on their PROJECTS progress.

The FCC will also be holding regular meetings every quarter with police chiefs from across the country to determine the best ways to reduce mobile device theft.

Waterproof iPhone Case Allows You to Take Pictures, Videos 20 Feet Underwater

April 9, 2012 By WebGlitzer

MarineCase iPhone Case

Wish you could take pictures and videos with your iPhone while submerged under 20 feet of water? A new waterproof swimsuit for the iPhone 4 and 4S keeps the phone completely dry — whether you’re snapping shots of marine life in the ocean or texting during a casual swim in the pool.

iPhone case manufacturer Concord Keystone has created the Keystone ECO MarineCase, which protects against water exposure. The device also works well in any situation where water might be present, such as snorkeling, fishing, boating and rafting.

The clear protective silicon cover supports the full iPhone screen and call functionality, so you can watch videos, answer email, send texts and use apps without ever leaving the water. It also protects against sand at the beach.

The case — which comes in black and white, along with a neck strap — is not for everyday use. It’s designed for in-water use, so you would switch your cases before jumping into water: “You don’t swim in your everyday clothes. Your iPhone shouldn’t either,” the site says.

Check out the video below of a turtle swimming underwater, which was taken with an iPhone wearing the MarineCase. The mobile swimsuits are now available for $ 39.99 on Amazon.

Google Co-Founder Sergey Brin Caught Wearing Google Glasses

April 6, 2012 By WebGlitzer

brin-google-glasses-600Looks like the Google Glasses are real after all. Google co-founder Sergey Brin was spotted wearing them in San Francisco by a prominent tech writer, and he even managed to snap a photo of the prototype specs.

Blogger Robert Scoble met up with Brin at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco and, seeing that Brin was wearing a pair of the freshly unveiled Google Glasses, took a photo of the two of them with his camera, which he promptly posted on Instagram and Twitter.

Scoble says Brin wouldn’t let him try on the sci-fi specs, which communicate with the wearer’s smartphone to relay information and turn the glasses into a futuristic heads-up display. However, he did say the glasses appeared to be very lightweight, and that they seemed to be flashing info to Brin as they talked. He also said they looked “self-contained,” not requiring other hardware (although a wireless connection to a phone wouldn’t be visible).

— Robert Scoble (@Scobleizer) April 6, 2012

The Google Glasses, which the company officially unveiled Wednesday, have sharply divided the Internet. While many tech enthusiasts have praised Google for daring to make a useful and lightweight version of a mainstream heads-up display, detractors have pointed out the many potential pitfalls (such as user distraction) and how silly they could end up looking.

Still, with Brin wearing them in public, a final product may be coming sooner than later. Initial reports said the glasses would go on sale by the end of the year, but a Google spokesperson later told Mashable that was “extremely unlikely.” Scoble tweeted that the glasses were many months, if not years away from being “productized,” though it’s not clear if Brin said so or if it’s his own speculation.
