Britney Spears and Madonna are famous for it, and many others are doing it, singing about it, watching it, and enjoying it – Girls Kissing Girls!  This kissing that men find so erotic happens more than on tv and is extra special to see it in person in bars, on the street, beech, or bedroom.  Katy Perry’s celebration of her all-girl lip-lock song and country newcomer Kacey Musgraves singing about kissing a girl if you want to, shows that it girl kissing has moved into the mainstream.

however, Girl-to-girl kissing is not something new. It is not any less common than boy-to-boy, girl-to-boy or any kind of gender combinations that humans find themselves in. The openness with which these girls are kissing each other, as well as the way this phenomenon has dramatically gone from shocking to titillating, is what is new!

The Girl Kissing Girl Trend

Verta Taylor, a sociology professor at the UCSB (University of California, Santa Barbara), together with her colleague Leila J. Rupp, sought to examine the trend behind the girl-girl kissing. According to the duo, there was one national survey which reported that less than 2% of women referred to themselves as bisexual or lesbian. However, a full 8% of the girls said that they either felt engaging in same-sex act or had same-sex desire. The absolute numbers may be low, given that this is deeply a personal matter.

The first kind of girls is the promiscuous minxes. These are normally hot and wicked. They know men love them because they are hot. This is why they tend to use their seductive charm to attract men.

Drunk Girls

The other group of girls that kiss each other is the drunk hotties. These do not know what they are doing. They will only come back to their senses after doing it.

Girls in Love

In most cases, these girls will not care whether they are being watched or not. These truly love one another and think that you are a scum to watch them.

Why Girls Kiss Girls

So why do girls kiss girls? Even more so, why do they do it so much in public? There are basically four reasons that seem to drive this trend.

1). Being influenced by celebrities

The first one is being influenced by their favorite stars that are not afraid to kiss fellow girls on award shows on the full glare of cameras. Here is where celebrities like Britney Spears and Scarlet Johansson come in.

According to one female student interviewed by researchers,

“….It’s usually brought on by, I don’t know, like shots or drinking or people kind of saying something to like cheer it on or whatever,” “And it’s usually done in order to turn guys on or to seek male attention in some way.”
This, according to Rupp and Taylor, fits perfectly into old feminist concept of the power imbalance that is seen in “male gaze”. The men are usually the observers while the women being the observed. While it is true that girls could hold boys in awe by their open sexual displays, they are still seen performing for the pleasure of the audience. On the other hand, boys still enjoy the socially dominant position.

2). Genuine experimentation

This is another reason for females, especially those who do not view themselves as lesbians, to engage in same-sex connecting between themselves. These girls, known as bi-curious girls or “bar-curious as they are increasingly being referred to, are driven by their curiosity about what having same-sex experience would be. Given that we are living in a more accepting culture, experimenting is more likely to follow.

According to one bi-curious girl who was interviewed by the UCSB researchers, the fact that this experimentation does take place in the presence of other people is not to suggest that it all has to do with showing off. According to her, kissing in public is good for women. She further added that girls may not comfortably express their affection to their fellow girls when they are alone. The kissing girls seem to be more comfortable in public since other people are also experiencing delight from them.

3). As a form of intimacy

There is another group of bi-curious girls who would rather they are called LTG’s (Lesbians Till Graduation). This accurately represents what many women feel about same-sex kissing: a kind of intimacy and also diversion. However, this kissing does not ultimately feel like correct orientation. For some other girls, particularly those en route to becoming full-time lesbians, or those who are just discovering their sexual orientation, the girl-girl kissing phenomenon, especially in party setting, offers a comfortable and safe glide path in an often rocky transition.

At the start, these girls kiss other girls just so they can impress their male colleagues. But they soon realize that they like it. Finally, they come to the realization that there is indeed real reason for kissing other girls. According to Rupp and Taylor, this gradual transitioning could explain why the first same-sex ordeal for many lesbians tends to be a three-some that usually involves a male partner. This, according to them, and in their own words, “…is an extension of the safe heterosexual space for exploring same-sex desire.”

The girl-girl kissing phenomenon amounts to what students and researchers term as “heteroflexibility”. This refers to a sexual elasticity which is not a bad thing, on the whole. It has rigid, yet ultimately brittle, sexual rules which have led to a lot of sorrows in the past. Some of this damage can only be healed by greater openness and tolerance.

Unchecked sexual adventurism, irrespective of whether it is gay, straight or both, has never been a wise or a safe way to go. However, a sensible experimenting of sexual menu can be a good way for younger people to better understand themselves, especially if that is what their appetites and interests lead them to.

4). Because it turns guys on

Another reason that explains why girls kiss girls in public is so as to turn on men. Most men cannot handle seeing girls kiss others.

Men are so turned on by the idea of girls doing it together. Girls take full advantage of this fact, because they know men like

watching them kiss. It draws attention of men to them.

What about it?

The idea of girls kissing girls is not necessarily a new thing. But what is new is their increasing tendency to do it in public, sometimes even under the full glare of camera. Psychologists give their reasons of the girls doing it in public. Among the main reasons are to seek men’s attention, to turn guys on and to experiment how it feels to have same-sex kissing.  Whatever the reasons, We don’t mind it one bit!
